Lodi High School senior Phillip Kruse is going out in style. Liberty Ranch High School freshman Courtney Robinson is making a grand entrance. Their paths will cross at the 2013 CIF State Cross Country Championships.
Kruse and Robinson both punched their tickets to the state meet with fifth-place finishes at the Sac-Joaquin Section Championships at Willow Hill in Folsom on Saturday.
Kruse, competing in Division II, clocked a time of 16 minutes, 19 seconds. Robinson, running in Division IV, had a time of 20:06.
Two other local runners came close to joining them at state, which will be held Saturday, Nov. 30 at Woodward Park in Fresno.
Lodi sophomore Haley Boynton was 18th in Division II with a time of 20:13. She needed to be in the top 14 to advance and was just 10 seconds off the qualifying time.
Tokay High School sophomore Alec Hastings was 20th in Division I with a time of 16:58.
He needed to be in the top 12 to move on and was only 11 seconds behind the 12th-place runner.
