Chad Eric Donley: The facts behind a few more Christmas myths

This morning I am continuing my mini-series separating Christmas fact from Christmas myth. Today, I want us to look at the Scriptures retelling of the Christmas story to get a few facts straight that some traditional telling of the Christmas story misrepresented.

Frank Nolton: Cross and resurrection in Christmas

The Christmas story is so simple, and yet it is so profound. The Son of God, one of the three persons in the triune Godhead, came to earth for the ultimate destiny of the cross on which He died for the sins of mankind.

Stockton Diocese Bishop Stephen Blaire: A special message for Labor Day

Every human being enjoys a basic right to be respected, not because of any title, position, prestige, or accomplishment but first of all because we are created in the image and likeness of God.

A memorial to remember

Many view Memorial Day as simply an opportunity to have a three-day weekend and go to Lodi Lake. The very purpose has either been forgotten by some or never known by others.

Thanks for making ‘The Story’ a success

Thank you, Lodi. What wonderful support so many thousands within our greater community have given regarding “The Story” ministry and articles that were published right here in the Religion section. The members and friends of Emanuel Lutheran, First Baptist, Ham Lane Church of Christ, Temple Baptist and Vinewood Community Church thank you and the Lodi News-Sentinel for being part of “The Story.”

The End of Time

Have you ever noticed that the words "new and improved" often turn out to be neither? Most of us have been consumers long enough to lower our expectations when we read an advertisement suggesting that some product has been improved upon. In our most cynical moments, we might even roll our eyes in disgust as we realize the only thing "new and improved" about this product is the price.

Serve the Lord in any way you can

Do you enjoy traveling? I love the adventure that comes with leaving Lodi or even the United States of America. I grew up in Michigan. Besides going across the river to visit family in Canada and an annual trip to Florida to see grandparents, my travels were fairly limited. But then, as an adult who believes in Jesus Christ as my personal Lord and Savior, I realized His created world held many adventures.

A most unlikely missionary

Drive a-round Lodi, and you can't help but notice the number of Christian churches. There are at least 60. Some have begun within the last several years. I happen to pastor one that is nearing its 100th anniversary. While they are different, every one of them is rooted in the same story revealed in the Bible — the story of God's mission of love to redeem and restore a lost and broken world.

No Plan B — The church as God's hands and feet in the world today

There are a lot of things that start small, but under the right conditions spread out and grow. A small stone thrown into a still pond creates wave after wave. A tiny seed planted into good soil and given the right light and water will take root and become a giant tree. A tiny spark, when it catches the right fuel, becomes a raging fire.

Who is that man?

Jesus Christ stands as one of the most fascinating and influential people in history. A Time magazine article looking to the turn of the 21st century stated: "The memory of any stretch of years eventually resolves to a list of names, and one of he useful ways of recalling the past two millenniums is by listing the people who have acquired great power.

Is God even mentioned?

As thousands in the Lodi community walk through the journey called "The Story," we can rejoice in its effect. At Emanuel Lutheran, the number of people involved in Bible studies has quadrupled. This story is repeated in similar fashion at First Baptist, Ham Lane Church of Christ, Temple Baptist and Vinewood Community Church ... God and His people are on the move.
