Daughters of the American Revolution, El Toyon Chapter, honored 23 American History Essay contest winners, their principals, teachers, parents, and guests with an award ceremony and tea on March 5 at St. Peter Lutheran Church.
Fifth grough eighth grade students in public and private schools, as well as home schooled students, are eligible to participate in the annual contest. This year’s topic, “A Child’s Journey Through Ellis Island” proved to be an interesting one for the 110 participants from four area schools: St. Peter Lutheran School, Lodi Christian School, Benjamin Holt College Preparatory Academy and First Baptist Christian School of Stockton.
Each school selected the top three essays from grades fifth through eighth, which were forwarded to the judges for competition among the four schools. This year’s judges from the community were Sara Blicharz, Mary Moyer, and Trudy Reed.
Winners received a certificate of achievement, a flag code booklet, and scholarship monies; first-place winners also received bronze medals. First-place essays were forwarded to DAR District II to compete at the district level. We are pleased to announce that two first-place winners were District II winners and are now competing at the state level. District II winners received a certificate of achievement and scholarship monies.
