After a three-month investigation, John Frederick Kautz, 51, of Lodi was convicted of two poaching-related misdemeanors in Sacramento County last Tuesday for killing a large blacktail deer in 2016, according to a press release from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Kautz pleaded no contest to charges of possession of an illegally poached deer and falsification of a deer tag reporting information as part of a plea deal with the Sacramento County District Attorney for killing a buck on his property in Wilton in December 2016, two months after deer season ended in the area. He was sentenced to two days in county jail, fined $5,000, placed on three years’ searchable probation, ordered to surrender the mounted deer head and prohibited from hunting or accompanying other hunters during the probation.
