This year’s Mokelumne Current is a banner year, matching the river’s nickname, the Mighty Mokelumne, the name given by some of those who have been brave, or foolish, enough to kayak on the Mokelumne when Camanche Reservoir releases exceed 500 cubic feet per second.

I was one of those recent naive kayakers who thought the river tame enough for paddling at 670 cfs, but then got sucked under a snag and dumped in the river, and lived to tell. I have a new respect and appreciation for the Mokelumne River’s white water, and also for good friends prepared to rescue as needed.
