A small garden of economic plants was established on the Berkeley campus in the 1870s. The University of California Botanical Garden at Berkeley was formally established in 1890. Today, the 34-acre non-profit research garden and museum is filled with collections of many rare and endangered plants and is open year-round for the public.

Chris Carmichael, associate director of collections and horticulture, took some time on a recent afternoon to talk about what there is to see at the gardens.
