Christmas on overdrive

My favorite part of Christmas isn’t Christmas at all.

Now, don’t go telling my mom or my pastor, or I’ll get a bit of a talking-to, reminding me that Christmas is about family and the birth of Jesus. Yes, I know that. As a 25-year-old white woman in America, I am so aware of that fact.

But what about the family you create for yourself?

Today, my roommate and I had a mini-Christmas in her office at work, when she gave me two adorable gifts and I arranged to send hers to her parents’ home back East where she will be spending Christmas Day.

Tonight, I’m heading out to a church program, at a church that is not mine, with people to which I am not related. Then we’ll go back to their house and exchange gifts.

This is Friendmas, and I love it. It’s those moments and outings ahead of the big day, where you get excited about the 25th and get everything prepared.

I love it because it reminds me that all the love and joy I have in my life can’t possibly be crammed into one day. To have any hope of really enjoying it, you’ve got to spread it out and share it.

So I can have a ten-minute Christmas on a Friday morning, then a 2-hour Christmas that evening, then the real, official Christmas Day, followed by yet another Christmas next Saturday.

Does that mean my favorite part of Christmas is more Christmas? Or Christmas: The Expansion Pack? Yes. And it’s perfect.
