Do you remember the late 50’s to early 60’s wholesome sitcom, “Leave it to Beaver” starring Jerry Mathers? Some 30 years later, Weight Watcher’s Magazine ran an article featuring television personalities sharing their favorite recipes, and Jerry Mathers’ barbecue sauce caught my eye.

I have made this barbecue sauce many times over the years and it’s perfect for summertime cookouts. The sauce is good on pork chops, chicken, hamburger or steak. I have tweaked the original recipe and it is absolutely delish — both tangy and sweet. It’s a winner for a barbecue dinner.

Jerry Mathers’ BBQ pork chops

4 tablespoons oil

1 cup chopped onion

1 tablespoon minced garlic

1 cup catsup

1 tablespoon and 1 teaspoon brown sugar

2 tablespoons and 1 teaspoon red wine vinegar

2 tablespoons and 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

1 tablespoon chili powder

4 lean pork chops

Mix all ingredients, except pork chops, in bowl. Grill pork chops on both sides basting with sauce. Makes one cup barbecue sauce.
