Lodi’s Fourth Annual Bridal Event INDEX OF STORIES
» Brides still take stock in traditional invitations |
Ethnic weddings mix traditional and modern customsBy Sandra GonzalezSpecial to the News-Sentinel More and more brides are looking to update their traditional ethnic customs to create a new modern look for their wedding celebrations. Though brides choose to keep their family and cultural traditions, many are looking for ways to make them fresh. Ethnic brides are taking this idea to a new level. “I’m seeing Hispanic and Filipino brides buy traditional items made with a hip new look,” said Ramona Gonzalez, owner of Casa Gonzalez Bridal Boutique in Lodi.
Hispanic and Filipino wedding ceremonies traditionally use a laso, which is a satin cord decorated with dried or faux flowers. It is loosely placed around the necks of the couple in a “figure eight” configuration. The cord symbolizes the lifelong bond or tie between the bride and groom. Modern brides are moving from the satin cord to lasos made of fine crystal, pearls and decorative glass beads. The look is more elegant, classic and the materials can stand the test of time so each piece becomes an heirloom. Arras, a chest of blessed coins, are another item traditionally used in Hispanic and Filipino weddings. Originally meant to symbolize the man’s promise to be the financial provider for his wife and family, arras now represent a life of fidelity and wealth. The design of Arras has changed with the times as well. Once in the shape of a gold treasure chest, now arras come in a variety of styles and sizes. “Themed arras are definitely becoming part of the wedding,” Gonzalez says. “Silver is the new gold and color is in.”
Modern ethnic brides are looking at other ways, such as food served at weddings, to mix their American and ethnic heritage. Dishes like lobster ceviche with passion fruit (Hispanic), sea bass with miso-mustard sauce (Asian), grilled butterflied leg of lamb with lemon, herbs, and garlic (Mediterranean) reflect new techniques on traditional cuisine. Today’s ethnic brides are using the best of both worlds to design a wedding that is reflective of their traditions, yet modern to their lifestyle. Because the San Joaquin Valley is rich in diversity, local brides ethnic and non-ethnic are sure to find what they need to make their wedding unique, festive and memorable.
