  San Francisco hotels attractive, close

There’s never been a better time to visit the City by the Bay. Hotels are posting terrific rates, some of the best values ever. Even the city’s newest and ritziest hotels are offering deals.

The Four Seasons used to operate the Clift, which has reopened as Ian Schrager’s first San Francisco property. Despite Schrager’s plan to maintain rates starting at $325 per night, the Clift is discounting at least through March 31: Stay two nights for $295 per night and get the third night free, plus a $50 credit at the hotel’s restaurant, Asia de Cuba. The deal pencils out to $180 per night. (Before booking, check with a travel agent; earlier rooms were available for $175 per night through agents.) The hotel is at 495 Geary St; (800) 652-5438 or www.clifthotel.com.

The Huntington Hotel & Nob Hill Spa, where one can live in the style of a railroad baron, has a $300-per-night luxury room package that includes unlimited access to the spa and chauffeured sedan service within the city. Rates for luxury rooms usually start at $350 a night. The hotel is at 1075 California St.; (800) 227-4683 or www.huntingtonhotel.com.

On weekends through March 31, the oh-so-cool W San Francisco is offering a room for two, free parking, two tickets to the Museum of Modern Art and a choice of either two martinis or breakfast for two. The price: $229, compared to the standard weekend rate of $269, without the goodies. The hotel is at 181 Third St.; (877) W HOTELS or www.whotels.com.

The Fairmont has a $189 per night package through Feb. 28 that includes free parking, a disposable camera, Pier 39 discount coupons and a chef’s basket of goodies to enjoy on your way home. The hotel’s at 950 Mason St.; (800) 441-1414 or www.fairmont.com.

The city’s three leading boutique hotel companies — Kimpton Group, Joie de Vivre Hospitality and Personality Hotels — have teamed with American Express to launch www.sfonsale.com. Until April 30, the companies are offering rooms at rates of $99 to $135 per night. Pay with an American Express card and get an additional 10 percent discount.

Kimpton operates 16 hotels in San Francisco. Winterfest rates range from $99 per night at the Monticello Inn, Clarion Bedford and Cartwright hotels, to $175 a night at Hotel Palomar. Good package deals also are available. For more information, go to www.kimptongroup.com or phone (800) KIMPTON and ask for Winterfest rates and packages.

Joie de Vivre Hospitality operates 12 boutique hotels in San Francisco. Their best winter deals: rooms for $95 a night at Hotel Bijou, the Commodore, Andrews, Phoenix and Savoy hotels; rooms are $135 a night at the Archbishop’s Mansion, Hotel Del Sol, Jackson Court, Laurel Inn, the Maxwell, Nob Hill Lambourne and Hotel Rex. Most offer free parking and/or continental breakfast. For more information, go to the Web site, www.jdvhospitality.com, or telephone (800) 738-7477.

Four Personality hotels are offering super winter deals. Stay at Hotel Union Square or Hotel Metropolis for $99 a night or at the chic Hotel Diva or the Kensington Park Hotel for $139 a night — and get a “credit card” good for one night free on your next visit (when you pay for at least one other night). Rates include continental breakfast. Visit the Web site, www.personalityhotels.com, or telephone (800) 553-1900.

The boutique style 667-room Argent, in the SoMa district, has a great deal for anyone driving to San Francisco. Stay through March 31 for $139 a night and get free parking and a $20 Shell gas card to fill up the tank when you leave. The hotel is at 50 Third St.; (888) 238-0302 or www.argenthotel.com.

If you don’t mind walking down the hallway to the bathroom, the San Remo Hotel in North Beach is offering rooms for two starting at $65 per night.(Singles run $55 per night.) The hotel is at 2237 Mason St.; (800) 352-7366 or www.sanremohotel.com.

To find out about more winter deals being offered by San Francisco hotels, go to the San Francisco Convention & Visitor Bureau’s Web site, www.sfvisitor.org, and click on “hot hotel deals” or telephone (800) 368-2228.

Before booking a room, be sure to check out San Francisco Reservations at www.hotelres.com. Because of the Web site’s high volume booking, it is often able to offer better deals than consumers can get elsewhere. For a quick look at the Web site’s best values, go to www.hotelres.com/xtravalue.php.
