Everything you wanted to know about Lodi wine

Ever wonder how wine is made?

Confused by the difference between a white and red zinfandel?

The answers to these and more wine-related questions will be available at a new wine and visitors center due to open this fall in Lodi.

The Discover Lodi! Wine and Visitors Center, a $1.5 million project, will house a collection of interactive displays to educate visitors about wine and the wine-making process.

The center is a shared effort between the city of Lodi, the Lodi Conference and Visitors Bureau, private donors and the Lodi-Woodbridge Winegrape Commission, which markets wine grapes for area growers.

“This will appeal not just to the beginner,” said Mark Chandler, the commission’s executive director. “It will hold plenty of fascination for the experienced wine drinker, as well.”

And what would a wine center be without wine?

Five years ago, when the idea first took root, Lodi didn’t have enough wines to stock a tasting room, Chandler said.

But times have changed.

The center is expected to stock about 30 local vintages, which will be offered on a rotating basis, said Chandler.

“The idea is to be able to expose as many people as possible to Lodi’s wines,” he said.

The structure is being built near the corner of Turner and Lower Sacramento roads and will house both the Winegrape Commission and the Conference Bureau.

Although originally scheduled to open in early May, late rains will push back the center’s opening until early September, Chandler said.
