Galts Rae House, for history or weddings The Rae House Museum is Galts monument to the citys history, but this year, it will have a new use. The Galt Area Historical Society will rent the colorful garden for wedding receptions and other private events, now that a public kitchen and restrooms have been installed. The grounds are a popular location for wedding pictures as well, said museum curator Marilyn Blansett. Its really a nice focal point because of the rose garden, Blansett said. The Rae House is a restored 1868 Victorian at the southwest corner of Oak Avenue and Victorian Park Drive, three blocks west of Galt High School. The house was built by John Rae, a 19th-century ornamental plaster finisher at the state capitol in Sacramento. Family members lived in the gingerbread-style house until 1985, when Raes daughter, Alice Rae, moved to a convalescent hospital in San Jose. Alice Rae, a Galt elementary school teacher for more than 30 years who also served as city clerk in 1955, died in 1987. New to the museum this year are a collection of 40 photographs of the Fourth-and-C-street area, which was the center of town in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Blansett said. The photographs were donated by Diana and Kit Arlin. The Rae House is filled with photographs and furniture from Galts early days, including a 200-year-old spinning wheel, an old wood stove and a round ice box. Special events include the historical societys Old Fashioned Ice Cream Social on July 1 and a Christmas open house Dec. 9-10. The Rae House opens for tours from 1 to 4 p.m. the second and fourth Saturday of each month, except in January and February. Group tours are available on days other than Saturday by calling Blansett at (209) 745-2581 or (209) 745-3809, or the historical society at (209) 745-0951. |
