On Tuesday or Wednesday, Galt is the place to be

There’s nothing quite like Tuesday and Wednesday in Galt.

Thousands of people — mostly from out of town — flock to the city’s open-air market between 6 a.m. and 3 p.m. to buy from an assortment of goods.

More than 400 vendors from throughout the western United States sell clothes, electronics, housewares, toys, athletic jerseys, jackets and caps, flowers and other items.

Fresh produce is also available at 185 stands on Wednesdays.

The large assortment is equaled by the large crowd.

On an average day, the market attracts 10,000 to 12,000 people.

Those numbers swell around Thanksgiving and Christmas, Spring Break and other holidays.

On hot summer days, most savvy shoppers go in the early morning.

New this year, the city of Galt will add two parking lots on Caroline Avenue, creating 200 more parking spaces.

Long called the “flea market,” the Galt City Council removed the “flea” from the name in 1995 to buff its image.

The city-operated market can be reached by taking the Central Galt exit from Highway 99 and turning left on Civic Drive.

To avoid traffic, on especially busy days, northbound motorists can take the Crystal Way exit, while southbound customers may take the Fairway Drive exit.
