A mayor’s welcome to Lodi

Dear Lodi Visitors:

As mayor of Lodi and on behalf of the Lodi City Council, I would like to welcome you to our community. It is a pleasure and honor to have you visit our city. While you are here, please take time to explore and experience all that is Lodi. A former mayor affectionately named our community “livable, lovable Lodi,” and I am sure you will agree after you discover all the community has to offer and meet our warm, friendly and helpful citizens.

Lodi is the largest grape-growing region in the state — more than 75,000 acres — and is world renowned for its Zinfandel variety. The Lodi area is home to more than 30 small wineries and most have tasting rooms. The owners would love to show you around and introduce you to their exquisite wines. Our Wine and Visitors Bureau, located at Turner and Lower Sacramento roads, can assist you in planning your tour. The lovely Wine and Roses Inn and Spa is adjacent and a lovely place to stay the night or dine.

The greater Lodi area boasts some of the finest recreation facilities in the state. You can go skydiving, golfing, or venture out for boating on the Delta. Lodi is the gateway to more than 1,000 miles of Delta waterways. One of the jewels of Lodi is Lodi Lake, which is a man made lake located on Turner Road across from our General Mills plant. The lake offers many recreation pursuits from boating, swimming, picnicking, bird watching, a walk through a true wilderness area, to just plain relaxing.

The regional Micke Grove Park features a zoo, children’s amusement park, a Japanese Garden and a variety of picnic areas. The Micke Grove golf course borders the park.

Our performing arts center — Hutchins Street Square — is the cultural heart of the community. To preserve the architecture and history of the former Lodi Union High School built in 1913, the school was converted into a cultural masterpiece. The Square features a 900-seat auditorium, senior center and conference center. The center has hosted symphonic orchestras, musical concerts and many different theatrical performances.

Lodi’s downtown district has undergone major revitalization and is the heart of the city. It offers many fine restaurants, a state-of-the-art 12 screen movie theater and shopping with ample free parking in our new downtown-parking garage. Night-time turns School Street into a lighted fairyland. During the summer, downtown hosts a Farmer’s Market on Thursday evenings and many downtown merchants remain open for shopping. There are menus for every appetite from sandwiches to gourmet, from stand up to quiet intimate settings and outdoor dining.

Please make time to visit our downtown Civic Center. Our City Hall is more than 80 years old. The classical revival-style Carnegie Forum, where City Council meets twice a month, is a remodeled and restored former library constructed in 1910. Adjacent to the forum is the “must see” new All Veterans Memorial Plaza with a cascading waterfall, eternal flame and etched poetry blocks. The Arts Commission sponsors “Lunch Time Live” musical groups at noon during the summer at the plaza. Our new police facility nearby will be dedicated in early 2004. The Lodi Library, which is open evenings and weekends, is also close by.

The downtown features the Multi-Modal Transit Center, which when constructed preserved the original 1907 passenger depot. It is the hub of transportation in Lodi; our fixed route bus system transfers at the downtown facility, Greyhound calls it home, Amtrak stops in Lodi, taxi stands are located here, and there’s plenty of free parking.

All that Lodi has to offer in amenities is only secondary to the warm friendly and helpful people you will meet during your visit. Most of what Lodi has to offer is a result of the strength of character of the Lodi citizens, who fund raise millions of dollars for good causes and volunteer millions of hours to better our community. Everywhere, you will meet warm, friendly, helpful Lodians willing to share information about our community; they truly make Lodi memorable and “lovable.”

Lodi is a city of warmth and charm, and we hope that you will return again to visit us.
