The toughest 18 holes

By News-Sentinel staff

Following is a list of the 18 toughest holes in the area, according to the five-time defending league champion Lodi High School golf team.

1. Eighth hole at Woodbridge Country Club’s Lake Course (par 4, 415 yards) — Tee shot is very intimidating with a dogleg right and out of bounds on the left and right sides. It’s a gutsy move to use a driver — most go with a No. 3 wood and then a long iron to the green.

2. Eighth hole at Elkhorn Country Club (par 5, 532 yards) — Not a tricky hole, just intimidating.

Fairway isn’t that narrow, just looks that way with out of bounds on both sides.

3. 13th hole at Rancho Murieta’s North Course (par 4, 446 yards) — Straightaway with bunkers on right and left of fairway as well as out of bounds all the way down.

Drive is from an elevated tee box. The fairway is usually wet, so there is not much roll, leaving 170 to 200 yards to the flag.

4. Fourth hole at Rancho Murieta’s North Course (par 4, 451 yards) — Straightaway with out of bounds on left and right, most drives leave 170 to 180 yards to a green that slopes away and is guarded by heavy bunkers on both sides.

5. Fourth hole at Lockeford Springs (par 4, 470 yards) — To get around the corner, have to hit 270 yards off tee into a right-to-left crosswind that can blow you into the lake.

Long hitters use a No. 4 iron while short hitters have multiple choices.

There’s a monster bunker on the front left that protects green and out of bounds along right side.

6. 15th hole at Dry Creek (par 4, 443 yards) — A dogleg left with out of bounds on the left and a tree to the right. A little draw wouldn’t hurt.

7. 17th hole at The Reserve (par 4, 467 yards) — There is water to the right and if wind is blowing you almost have to aim shot at the water.

Water is all the way down right side with huge bunkers on left fairway and out of bounds on whole left side.

A No. 3 or 4 iron onto the green, which has huge bunkers to the left and water on the back and right sides. The whole green slopes toward water. Usually plays into strong south wind.

8. 16th hole at Swenson (par 4, 343 yards) — Trees on both sides of narrow fairway. Just a straight hole, which is tough because few people hit the ball straight.

9. 10th hole at Van Buskirk (par 4, 466 yards) — Main feature is narrow fairway with heavy trees on both sides. It’s very straight, so fades or draws will kill you.

10. 16th hole at Stevinson Ranch (par 3, 205 yards) — Have to lay up or try to clear water that cuts through course. There is water on right side and traps on both sides of green.

11. Third hole at Del Rio County Club’s Oak Course (par 4, 458 yards) — Fairway bunker on left and three bunkers guarding the green — two on the left and one on the right. It’s a two-tiered green. Tough because it always plays into the wind.

12. Sixth hole at Woodbridge Country Club’s River Course (par 5, 523 yards) — Straight forward, with severe dogleg right from 150 yards in. Favor left side on drive. Second shot is tough with large trees guarding left side and water on the right.

13. 11th hole at Manteca (par 4, 431 yards) — Narrow fairway with lateral hazard on left and thick trees on right.

14. Third hole at Turlock Country Club (par 4, 455 yards) — Tree just to left of fairway about 100 yards out and two bunkers left of the green. Usually plays into right-to-left wind. Just a tough hole.

15. Ninth hole at Spring Creek Country Club (453 yards, par 4) — Slightly uphill to the green, with a grove of trees on the right side and a creek that goes all the way down the left side and crosses in front of the green. Green is severely sloped.

16. 18th hole at LaContenta (par 4, 460 yards) — Dogleg left and out of bounds and pine trees on left. About 100 yards short of green is a water hazard that cuts across middle of hole.

17. 18th hole at Dry Creek (par 4, 420 yards) — Has a dogleg left. Approach shot is uphill over the creek between two large trees to a small green.

18. 11th hole at Stockton Country Club (par 3, 210 yards) — Extremely tough in the wind. Water to the right and is surrounded by three bunkers. Have to hit it accurate and long.
