Answering every golfer’s favorite questions

By Kevin Hietbrink
News-Sentinel Sports Writer

No matter how long you play golf, you never master the sport.

Even professionals on the PGA Tour learn new things about the game everyday.

Every player has questions that they need help in answering. With that said, here are some of the most frequently asked golf questions, and the answers received from some of the local professionals:

How can I get the most distance out of my drives?

“Having a strong swing is like throwing a punch. You need to be square on with your target to get the most power. So you need to come into the ball straight and hit the ball evenly.”

— David Ring, Forest Lake Golf Club professional

“The main thing to get the most distance is to have more club head speed through the ball. Also with new technology, the distance you can hit the ball is always getting longer.”

— Tony Troncale, head teaching professional for the city of Stockton

What in my swing is causing the biggest problems?

“Most people have no idea what there swing looks like. I would suggest that you videotape your swing and you will be surprised with what you see.”

— David Ring

How can I become a more consistent player?

“To become more consistent you need to improve your swing. The best way to do that is by taking lessons.”

— Tony Troncale

On the golf course I get frustrated easily, what is the best way to stay relaxed while playing?

“People have all types of routines that they go through on the course. If you get frustrated just stay with your routine. Talking to yourself can also help keep you calm while playing.”

— Tony Troncale

How can I get rid of my slice?

“There are two things that usually cause a slice. The first is if the club face is open when it strikes the ball. The second is if you swing from the outside in. That is if the path the club makes during your swing doesn’t come straight through the ball.”

— David Ring

How can I get rid of my hook?

“A hook is the opposite of a slice. It comes when you have a swing that goes from the inside out. A player who has a hook is usually a better player. So if a player starts with a slice and later starts to hook the ball, they are probably getting better,”

— David Ring

What is the best way to get the ball out of the sand?

“To get the ball out of the sand, you have to blast the sand underneath the ball with the head of the club.”

— Tony Troncale

What is the easiest way to cut strokes off of my score?

“The quickest way to cut strokes off of your score is to improve your short game or have a better understanding of it. So I would work on chip shots and puts.”

— David Ring

How do I know if I am using the right equipment?

“Some people use outdated equipment that is inferior to the new stuff out today. You don’t need to necessarily spend a lot of money on new clubs, but newer equipment is better. Obviously, using a new titanium or metal club is better then using the old clubs that were made of wood.”

— David Ring

Is the golf ball that I use really that important?

“With the balls that are made now, you can get a ball that is more consistent with your game. When picking a golf ball you should take into account how you play and what would benefit you the most.”

— Tony Troncale

How do I make sure that the clubs I have fit me correctly?

“For most people that are average size, the standard clubs are fine. But getting custom clubs that fit how you play can make you a better player.”

— David Ring
