Looking high, low for that something very old

Move over, Benicia. Lodi has its own Antique Row.

The downtown area offers a number of shops, and a selection of charming eateries provides a good excuse to break for lunch.

Refreshed, shoppers can take a short drive out to Lockeford and Clements for more shopping.

For all-out collectible mania, don’t miss the biannual Lodi Street Faire in May and October. Dealers from all over Northern California come to set up shop in the street, transporting whole suites of sweet deals in the way of antique furniture. They are generally willing to deal, since what they don’t sell has to be packed up and carted back home to Penn Valley or Hayward.

Parking is easy downtown with the addition of the new parking garage and generous public lots. Everything is within a few blocks.

The outlying shops are worth the short trip in the car. Hint: Use the eastern frontage road which parallels Highway 99 to travel south from downtown to Kettleman Lane, rather than negotiating the traffic on Cherokee Lane.

Here are a few of the many destinations for avid collectors:

Second Hand Rose, 14 N. School St., 339-1166.

A real adventure for bargain hunters. The consignment shop offers pedestrian-type used furniture alongside treasures like a Victorian “dry sink,” castle-scale ornate framed mirrors and the occasional piece of genuine Lustreware or an obscure Goebbels figurine. Hunting is best in the basement, and items can move in and out of the shop quickly.

Avignon of France, 108 W. Pine St., 368-1471.

A tiny shop featuring freshly imported antiques from France. From black marble-topped nightstands to little Eiffel Tower necklaces, the inventory is refreshed by owner Cinderr Witt’s trips to the Continent.

Mom’s Precious Treasures, 100 W. Pine St., 365-0881.

Big store. Elvis clocks, cookie tins, gate-leg tables and Fiesta-ware can be found amid stacks of vinyl records, functional electric frying pans and reproduction iron headboards.

Abigail’s Cottage, 6 West Pine St., 334-2172.

At the beginning of downtown Lodi’s newly dubbed “Archway District,” named for the city’s signature mission arch. A New England-style country store of antiques and reproductions, featuring many one-of-a-kind items, furniture, linens and accessories.

House of Clocks, 110 S. Church St., 369-7961.

A tiny, quaint family-owned business specializing in timeless timepieces.

Alicia’s Antiques, 14 W. Pine St., 365-7006.

If you’ve been searching high and low for something, then this is the spot where you may find it.

Old Town Antiques 121 S. School St.

Looking for a place that has a little bit of everything? You can stop looking once you walk through the door. 339-8454.

Check Dave’s, 2401 W. Turner Road, 334-3700.

In the shopping center on Turner Road next to Salisbury’s Market. Concentration on used books, but a shopper might get lucky searching through the stock and find a rustic gem.

The Immigrant’s Corner— 830 S. Beckman Rd., 369-7080. Corner of Beckman Road and Industrial Way. Stocking mostly European antiques.

Graves’ Country Antiques, 15 N. Cherokee Lane, 368-5740.

Around the corner from Industrial Way.

Farmhouse Antiques, 13329 E. Highway 88, Lockeford, 727-3014.

Bob’s Country Classics — 9040 E. Highway 12, 334-2683.

Lockeford Antiques, 18540 E. Highway 88, Lockeford, 727-5624.

A huge place with a variety of Belgian, French and Austrian items.

Lockeford Corner Antiques, 13480 E. Highway 88, Lockeford, 727-3546. Hosts eight dealers.

No Left Turn Antiques, 13333 E. Highway 88, Lockeford, 727-3038. Look for the little shop next to the saddle shop on the north side of Highway 88 near Macville Road.

Clements Mercantile, 18950 E. Highway 88, Clements, 759-3000.

Antiques and collectibles. Connected to Lucas Feed Lot Restaurant.
