Jim Cooper at a glance
Background: He was born in France, the son of an U.S. Air Force man who ended his career at Mather Air Force Base in Sacramento. Cooper grew up in Rancho Cordova and moved to Elk Grove once he started his career.
Family: He is married to Kristen and has four daughters, ages 14 to 23.
Career: Has worked for the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department for 25 years; is currently a commander.
Education: Master’s degree in organizational leadership from St. Mary’s College; attended the FBI National Academy.
Community activities and board memberships: Elk Grove City Council member for 14 years; served on board of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Sacramento Area, the Children’s Receiving Home of Sacramento, the Boys and Girls Club, and WINN (a homeless teen outreach organization in Sacramento). Named past Man of the Year by both Big Brothers Big Sisters and Elk Grove citizens. Built the Elk Grove softball league, where he is a coach, from 400 participants to 700.
