When we asked readers to pick the top local story of 2013, the vast majority chose a deadly crash on Ham Lane that killed six members of one local family. Of the 260 votes cast in an online survey, more than 200 chose the crash story as the biggest story of the year.

Lodi was reeling on Wednesday from the worst fatal crash in the city’s recent history, as police confirmed that six members of one local family perished in a horrific collision on Ham Lane on Tuesday night. The only family member to survive is a 9-year-old boy, who is still in critical condition at a nearby hospital.

Robert Sieler is a third-generation employee of the Lodi Unified School District. A 15-year district employee and now head custodian at Houston School in Acampo, Sieler was named the district’s Classified Employee of the Year. He was honored at Tuesday’s Lodi Unified school board meeting.

Dan Crownover made a habit of feeding the cats that wandered around Epic Plastics on Turner Road — with his superiors' permission — before and after each eight-hour shift he worked. It's a 5-acre property, with lots of pipe storage and a car part junkyard next door. That makes for plenty of nooks and crannies for feral cats to find shelter.
