This is in regards to the fire at Larry and Toni Miller’s house on Sept. 18. There were seven fire departments that responded that day, and during the course of extinguishing and securing their home and the few remains, I saw compassion at its best. The firefighters doing this incredible job showed such respect for the few objects they were able to rescue from the house.

As I walked out of a local grocery store on a Friday afternoon, I was approached by an individual who requested I sign a petition to help collect money through "just a small" increase in taxes to fund efforts to help in eliminating gangs. I cannot remember if it was statewide or local taxation. The fact catching my attention was that it was not a general taxation on every taxpayer; it was going to be taxation only on the wealthy. I think the income had to be $250K-plus.

We’re finally out of the post-winter doldrums and in the midst of the buildup to the summer movie season, and I must admit I’m pretty psyched. With any luck we have a handful of high-quality event movies to look forward to (on that note, check back next time for a look at “The Hunger Games”), and perhaps some of the “lesser” titles will provide some pleasant surprises. Take this week’s pick, which I was initially not even going to see until early reviews swayed my opinion just enough to give it a shot. Turns out it’s the best time I’ve had at the movies so far this year, and easily the most flat-out funny flick I’ve seen since last year’s “Horrible Bosses.” Go figure, huh?

With awards season now well behind us, it is time to start looking ahead to the pre-summer releases (admittedly there aren’t many, since according to the Hollywood calendar summer starts in about six weeks).
