We are thankful for a bountiful harvest of wine grapes. Many people enjoy wine, and the word is the yields were strong and the quality in the bottle is going to be great. There's even reliable information that prices are strong.

Hooray for Theresa Larson’s answer to Joe Guzzardi and all the
guys who complain about Pink October and breast cancer awareness.
If not for all of that “fuss,” as some of those men call it, I and
many a wife, mother, daughter, etc. would not be alive today.

A few years ago, I entered a local restaurant wearing my pink
ribbons and denim in support of Geweke's Pink October fundraising
efforts. The young man behind the counter expressed his pink ribbon
fatigue, admitted he simply did not "get it," and stated he did not
know what the fuss was all about.

On the surface, it didn't seem like there was much to give
thanks for in 2009. Jobless rates skyrocketed, people lost their
homes at a rate not seen since the Great Depression and the state
legislature again refused to pass a budget on time.

The Soroptimist International of Lodi recently selected Theresa
Larson as the Making a Difference for Women Award. This award
acknowledges women who are working to improve the lives of women
and girls through their personal or professional activities. Their
efforts help to promote the issues that are important to the
Soroptimist organization. Honorees are women who have worked in
extraordinary ways to benefit women and girls. The program enables
local Soroptimist clubs and the Soroptimist organization to thank
these women and encourage others to explore ways to assist women
and girls. The program begins on the club level, where the type of
recognition varies. Award winners at the club level are eligible
for additional awards at other levels of the organization.

Whether it's an undercooked turkey, mixing the wrong ingredients
or flames shooting up the wall, almost everyone has a mishap that
has happened on Thanksgiving. And while they seem disastrous at the
time, these Thanksgiving disasters can create future family laughs
for the whole family to enjoy. Some local residents have shared
their unfortunate, yet funny Thanksgiving stories.

I wear many hats at the Lodi News-Sentinel. After being a
columnist for the newspaper for nearly six years, I wrote my last
column in November 2003. At the time, readers, co-workers and
friends expressed concern for me. Was everything okay? Was my
health good? Would I still be working at the Lodi News-Sentinel?

OK. I'll admit it. As a LOEL Foundation Board member, I am a

not under the LOEL Center's umbrella.

There's not much that can make a woman smile like being
surrounded by a crew of firefighters in uniform. But in the 2008
Survivors Calendar, local women aren't just smiling because they
are posing with firefighters. They're smiling because they've won
the breast cancer battle.

A defining moment is generally a loss that has a profound impact
or that affects our life in a memorable way. It is stashed away in
our brain and resurfaces often. This is a difficult article for me
to write, but it will be an honor to tell Melissa's friends. There
may be some who read this and will understand, if they too have
lost a child.
