Sam Berns grew up with a genetic disorder called progeria. The disease affects only about 350 children worldwide and comes with the unfortunate side effects of rapid aging, heart disease, stunted growth, tight skin and lack of weight gain, to name a few. Progeria is found to end most lives by the young age of 13, since there is no known cure.

On April 9, 2007, I was sworn in as a police officer for the
city of Lodi. The look in my children's eyes was priceless, though
this was not the first time I had taken an oath to protect and
serve. Nevertheless, as I write this I smile, thinking of how lucky
I am and how making the decision to work as a police officer in the
city of Lodi was one of the best choices I have ever made.
