Since 1952, when the hospital first opened its doors in Lodi, those of us who volunteer and work at Lodi Memorial Hospital, now Lodi Health, have sincerely appreciated the strong loyalty and support of the community members we serve.

Fred Hoffman recently spent some time in the new cardiac unit at Lodi Memorial Hospital. After open-heart surgery at a Sacramento hospital last year, the Herald resident drove to the center on South Fairmont Avenue and rode a stationary bicycle or walked on a treadmill while nurses monitored his heart rate, three days a week for 12 weeks.

With their heads bowed, 70 people listened to the wail of police sirens fade in and out, the noise slicing through the silence. The sirens represented all of the firefighters, police officers and volunteers who drove toward the World Trade Center when the towers collapsed on Sept. 11, 2001.

Community members gathered at Lodi Memorial Hospital on Wednesday to listen to a panel speak on palliative care.
Palliative care is a type of medicine where the whole body is cared for in a chronic or ending stage. It focuses on giving relief from pain and stresses caused by illness. The aim of palliative healing is to improve the quality of life for both the patient and the family.

With a new president behind the wheel and about 25 percent of the $250 million voter-approved Measure L Bond from 2004 remaining, the Delta College Board of Trustees voted to put the brakes on any future Measure L projects.
The decision to initiate a limited suspension of new Measure L Bond construction projects, voted on at a July 19 board meeting, was made so the college can make the best plan for using the remaining estimated $60 million of the bond.
