Thrilled to see kids around town picking up trash (recent article on boy’s valiant efforts to clean up his neighborhood) and molding murals to discourage local litterbugs (Heritage students creating creatures in clay). I, too, do daily rounds of trash pickup — a duty never done. Came up with this catchy rhyme in hopes it also may discourage “local litterbugs.”

An Assembly bill that has been pushing to ban Styrofoam
production in California has been placed in the Assembly's

Assemblywoman Allison Huber, D-El Dorado Hills, will bring some
fellow legislators to tour the Dart Container plant in Lodi on
Tuesday in an effort to try to stop her colleagues from passing a
bill that would greatly restrict Styrofoam usage in California.

Let's see, California's unemployment rate is around 11.5
percent. The state is about $42 billion in debt. Gangs, drugs and
illegal immigration are increasing problems. And, our illustrious
legislature is spending time worrying about the horrible evil of
Styrofoam cups and plates — those dastardly purveyors of wickedness
that, if allowed to continue their carnage of holding coffee and
food, will destroy life as we know it on this planet. Bye-bye even
more businesses and jobs.

As Dart Container and other polystyrene makers
lobby to defeat a proposed ban on the use of their product in
the food service industry, they are also pushing the public to
recycle their product.
But, why can’t Lodians recycle polystyrene in their home
recycling containers? We think the city of Lodi and Waste
Management could help save the 90 jobs at Dart if they would put
their heads together.

Lodi's Dart Container plant is fighting to stay in business as a
bill proposing to end or greatly restrict Styrofoam usage in
California inches closer to being passed by state legislators.
The plant has been a major supply source for local and state
distributors of plastic foam cups, plates and boxes since it opened
in Lodi 28 years ago. It has also been a top job provider for the
But a bill proposed by State Sen. Alan Lowenthal, D-Long Beach,
which aims to ban or restrict Styrofoam usage, could force the
plant to shut its doors and put roughly 90 people out of work.
Lowenthal could not be reached for comment.
