Dario Marenco this week began his final turn as chairman of the San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors, but stepped into a position far different than his first time at the reigns in 2001.

SACRAMENTO -- San Joaquin County Supervisor Steve Gutierrez said he voted for a 2001 resolution opposing a Calpine Inc. power plant in eastern Alameda County without knowing that a friend of his had a business relationship with a rival company.

SACRAMENTO -- Tracy developers Tony and Mike Souza both testified Wednesday that they felt lobbyist Monte McFall tried to extort campaign contributions from them four years ago.

SACRAMENTO -- FBI Special Agent Andrew Manson described to jurors a government corruption investigation that kept spreading with every interview, ending the second week of trial Friday for Monte McFall, 59, a former San Joaquin County lawman and water board member.

SACRAMENTO -- Land-use attorney Tom Terpstra testified Thursday that Monte McFall suggested his influence could be critical for a project Terpstra was pushing before the San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors in 2001.

San Joaquin County supervisors reacted with sadness and some indignation at the news that Sheriff Baxter Dunn retired and accepted a guilty plea for mail fraud in the federal charges against him.

The impending corruption trial of San Joaquin County Sheriff Baxter Dunn is expected to have a big effect on the county next year, supervisors said.
