Tokay High School freshman Julie Fukunaga took first place in the 16th annual San Joaquin County Junior High Spelling Bee on Wednesday. The runner up was Hanna Nakahara, a ninth-grade student at West High School in Tracy Unified School District. The winning word was "perambulation."
Lilia Frank, 14, stands with former Joe Serna Jr. Charter School Principal Michael Gillespie and Assistant Superintendent of elementary education Catherine Pennington. Frank attended Serna, a dual immersion school that teaches in English and Spanish, and won second place in the statewide Spanish Language Spelling Bee this year.

Well, I'm back after a hectic two months. April was, of course, largely taken up with plans for my 90th birthday (these days, 90 is nothing of an age) and arrangements to celebrate with various groups of friends here and there, so as many people could be included as possible. If I had invited all the people I wanted to the actual party, we would have to have rented the Grape Pavilion! Not possible, unfortunately.

For the second year in a row, Lodi's Julie Fukunaga took first
place in her division in the county spelling bee Wednesday. The
Elkhorn Middle School eighth-grader clinched the seventh- through
ninth-grade division with the word "soliloquy."
Vinewood Elementary School sixth-grader Jack Goebel earned a
second-place award in the fourth- through sixth-grade division. The
first place winner was Vivek Vanga, a fifth-grader at Tom Hawkins
Elementary in the Jefferson Elementary School District.
