A memorial service for Cecil Allen Reese Jr., 80, of Lodi, who died July 20, will be held at 2 p.m. Aug. 13 at Westside Assembly of God, 75 N. Crescent Ave., Lodi.

A graveside service for Emma Jean Weissner, 88, of Lodi, who died July 28, will be held at 11 a.m. today at Lodi Memorial Cemetery, 5750 E. Pine St., Lodi. A celebration of her life will follow at noon at First Baptist Church, 267 N. Mills Ave., Lodi.

A church service for Carl David Faccini, 33, of Lodi, who died July 26, will be held at 12:30 p.m. Friday at Bethel Church, 760 S. Ham Lane, Lodi. Committal will follow at Lodi Memorial Cemetery, 5750 E. Pine St., Lodi. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to noon at the church.

Known for her quick wit and history with Lodi Unified School District, former school board member and Lodi resident Sara Heberle has died. She was 93.

Now is the time of the lilies, at least here in my garden: day lilies, Easter lilies (regular time, not forced for Easter), calla lilies, and a beautiful white trumpet lily with feathery leaves that I forget the name of. Orange, yellow, white, and, later, dark red, plus purple and white glads. They are planted all over, here and there, so it’s like several soloists singing over the main chorus of green voices.

It was a meeting full of congratulations for the Lodi Unified School District Board of Trustees on Tuesday. Returning members and new members were sworn in, while a change of leadership took place for the boards officers.

Isaac Herrera, 14, has already gotten his hour of daily exercise in by the time the final school bell rings each day. Like most freshman students, he is enrolled in physical education and spent fourth period doing push-ups and jogging around the gym.

A majority of schools in the Lodi Unified School District made some positive progress on their Academic Performance Index scores, the annual ratings based on standardized spring tests. But only 14 schools have achieved the state target score of 800 points or higher, and no new schools hit that target this year.

Right now, the only all-weather running track in Lodi is closed to everyone who isn’t a physical education student or on a sports team at Tokay High School.
But in response to urging by several community members, the Lodi Unified School District board of trustees discussed the possibility of reopening the Tokay High track and field area to the public on a limited basis.
The track has been open to the neighborhood off and on since at least the 1980s. Neighbors head to the school to walk, jog or play handball and tennis on the courts.

Plans for a new arts-based charter school to be housed at
Clements School have been halted.
The Lodi Unified School District board of trustees was poised to
veto the petition, saying it was incomplete. Jack B. Bray said
before last week's school board meeting that while he and his team
were disappointed in the district's response, they remained
confident in the education plan and charter petition, and planned
to continue their effort.
