Lodians in reindeer get-ups, red suits and even Hawaiian shirts celebrated Christmas in Downtown Lodi on Thursday evening. About 2,500 people lined Church and School streets in 38-degree weather for the 18th annual Lodi Parade of Lights, which featured some 80 entries this year.

A chance to enjoy one of the biggest holiday shows in California comes not just in December, but on this very month. On Friday, Nov. 29, there will be a Christmas parade in historic downtown Sonora, as part of the 39th annual Sonora Christmas Craft and Music Festival, well-known as a spirited celebration of the Christmas season and one of California’s largest holiday shows.

While hanging out at Littleton Community Center to write a story and shoot photos of a special turkey dinner for senior citizens and the homeless, I saw a rather odd creature with a green face and wearing a red Santa jacket waving to passersby on Civic Drive on Sunday afternoon.

For some Lodi families, the annual Parade of Lights is a longtime tradition. But for others, this was their first year to enjoy the glittering spectacle.

Lodi will hold the 17th annual Parade of Lights and the first Reindeer Run tonight. The theme for this year's parade is "Miracle on School Street — Honoring Hometown Businesses."
Registration for the 0.85-mile Reindeer Run is $5, and it will be open from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Lodi Public Library Community Room, 201 W. Locust St. The run starts at 6 p.m.
At 6:17 p.m., the Parade of Lights will begin, and spectators will be able to enjoy countless lights, floats, marching bands, dance groups and themed vehicles. The parade route begins at Church and Locust streets.

For the first time, Lodi residents will have the opportunity to participate in a fun run where they wear antlers, don Christmas sweaters and string Christmas lights around their clothes before the 17th annual Parade of Lights.

Micke Grove Zoo has been transformed into a holiday wonderland for all ages. Bring the entire family and enjoy twinkling lights, games, crafts, wagon rides and refreshments. Have your family photo taken with Santa to commemorate Christmas season 2012. Refreshments will be available for purchase. Guests may bring a donation of canned food to benefit the Emergency Food Bank and receive one free child’s admission per family.

The Galt Park and Recreation Commission, meeting Wednesday night, recommended that the traditional Lighting of the Night parade route be the same as last year, according to interim Park and Recreation Director Armando Solis.
