From outside the red brick Central Street storefront, there is no feeling of a traditional Lodi winery. No barrels filled with bright flowers, and no planters of vines plucked from a vineyard. There’s not even a sign to let passersby know Viñedos Aurora wines are made inside.

The Fifth Annual Consumer Wine Awards Competition, where consumers evaluate entries and wineries get immediate results, is now accepting entries. The program is sponsored by the Lodi Tokay Rotary Club, and proceeds benefit their charitable work.

Holiday shoppers had three choices if they wanted to get their gifts early. Friday was Black Friday, in which stores offered goods that brought shoppers to the store before the sun rose. Saturday was Small-Business Saturday, which had great participation from Downtown Lodi merchants. Then there was Cyber Monday, where people could purchase discounted items, but only through the business' website.

At the urging of a few interested parties, the San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors has instructed staff to draft a text amendment that would put a ban or moratorium on marketing events for new wineries, and limit the same events for existing wineries.

establishments have pooled their resources and are working to
realize their vision of creating an environment that appeals to a
wide demographic of beer and wine drinkers.

A team of 66 judges showered Lodi vintners with awards at a
national showcase earlier this month. More than 5,000 wines from
across the country were entered at the 2011 San Francisco Chronicle
Wine Competition and a total of 133 Lodi wines came away with
medals. The trophy cache is the region’s best showing in the
26-year history of the competition. But one competition official
said Lodi’s success in the event is becoming an annual trend.

Branches have been stripped in vineyards across Lodi and the
gondolas have returned to the sheds. Harvest is over. Even though
work never fully stops on a farm, area winemakers and grape growers
are thankful they have a few weeks to take a short vacation to
unwind after another busy year.

Eve, I don’t know how many of you will have time between wrapping
presents, cooking a wonderful dinner and attending Christmas Eve
