Lodi firefighters, city leaders and family members gathered at Carnegie Forum on Wednesday morning to welcome two new firefighters to what Chief Larry Rooney described as the Lodi Fire Department family. They are the first new hires for the department in at least four years.

Holiday shoppers had three choices if they wanted to get their gifts early. Friday was Black Friday, in which stores offered goods that brought shoppers to the store before the sun rose. Saturday was Small-Business Saturday, which had great participation from Downtown Lodi merchants. Then there was Cyber Monday, where people could purchase discounted items, but only through the business' website.

The Tokay Tigers boys tennis team swept doubles play in a 5-4 win over the St. Mary’s Rams. Tokay finished the league season tied for second with a 5-5 mark in Tri-City Athletic League matches.

Hope you all enjoyed my top 10 list last week, and gleaned some
useful recommendations. This week I’ll take a very quick look at
“Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy,” which made my “most promising films I
didn’t see” list but ended up being one of the most spirit-crushing
disappointments of the year. I honestly don’t have much to say
about such an empty film, so I suppose I might as well squeeze in
my predictions for the Oscar nominations, set to be announced on
Tuesday, Jan. 24, at which point you will surely marvel at my
peerless prognosticative abilities.

It’s September, which means three things to a Halloween
enthusiast like me: the super-stores are open, grocery stores are
running candy discounts, and the time is ripe for scary movies.
I was looking forward to kicking off the Halloween season with a
look at “Apollo 18,” but critics and audiences alike have been
vehement in their near-unanimous hatred of the film. (I mean,
killer moon rocks? Just… wow. That’s not even worthy of a spoiler
Call me a follower, but I tend to listen to irate masses. But no
worries — although my radar has been a bit off lately, the next two
week’s columns are set in stone with the well-received “Contagion”

From a large mural on the ceiling to a wall filled with old
black and white photos, the Brewster's Bar and Grill is a tribute
to Galt's history.
The new business opened Monday and has generated continuous buzz
as the first trendy, sit-down restaurant in town.
Co-owner Alex Origoni said he was inspired by the restaurant's
location in the historic Brewster building, which used to be city's
old Post Office and general store.
