Thanks to local donors, it will be free to swim every weekend this summer at Blakely Park pool. Those swim sessions begin this Saturday, despite ongoing construction at the smaller pool.

The Lodi Sunrise Rotary Club hosted its 17th Annual Lodi Sunrise Century bicycle tour of vineyards, pastures and farm lands along lightly traveled roads around Lodi on Saturday, May 18, 2013. The event, a fundraiser for the club, includes 50k, 100k and 100-mile rides.

The Lodi Rotary Club knows the importance of a literate community. Each third-grade class in Lodi will receive a dictionary as a gift from the Rotary Club. Recently, the students at Lawrence Elementary received their special books.

The Lodi Rotary Club has announced the winners of the 2013 speech contest. Jessica Gaitan, first place, and Krystal Avila, runner up, seniors at Bear Creek High School, presented their public speaking skills at a recent lunch meeting on Jan. 24. Gaitan received a check from the club for $125, and Avila received a check for $100. Avila will advance to the upcoming districtwide contest.

Janet Wilcox was not one of those people who wanted to make a name for herself or be in the paper. She was well known, however, as the consummate volunteer at places like the Lodi Police Department, Lodi Public Library, People Assisting Lodi Shelter and the American Cancer Society.

The Fifth Annual Consumer Wine Awards Competition, where consumers evaluate entries and wineries get immediate results, is now accepting entries. The program is sponsored by the Lodi Tokay Rotary Club, and proceeds benefit their charitable work.

Steve and Carla Cole have been cooking for various organizations’ crab feeds for 36 years. Some of them have included the Lodi Police Department, Tokay High School, St. Luke’s and Pacific Gas and Electric. Saturday will mark the 11th time the two have cooked crab and all the fixings for the Lodi Boys and Girls Club. The two enjoy showing support to the club they feel offers a lot to local children.
