I know, I know. There were mistakes in my remembrance of things
past in the last column, and, thanks to a good friend, they are
herewith corrected. First, it was Okazaki's store with the
memorable snow cones, not Sasaki's. And the palm reader on Cherokee
Lane is still there. The toy store on the south end of Newfield's
main floor was Fuller's, not Gilbeau's, but a Gilbeau was in some

My morning got a bit messed up, so I wasn't able live-blog the
Boston Marathon as I did last year, but I
followed as best I could. Between Twitter and the Boston Athletic Association, I tracked about a
dozen runners, and heard about a bunch more. The men's winner was
Robert Cheruiyot of Kenya (a 21-year-old farmer who said he's going
buy some cows with his prize money), who set a course record;
American Ryan Hall was fourth and set a record for the fastest-ever
American on the course. Teyba Erkesso of Ethiopia won the women's
race by three seconds.

and David Armstrong have built the newest phase of their lives. In
Astoria, strangers say hello to one another. It is normal for an
apartment to rent for $400 a month. A main tourist attraction is
"The Goonies" house, where the cult classic was filmed. It's an old
logging and fishing community, where cruise ships drop off tourists
and the Columbia River separates the small town from Washington
