The Diocese of Stockton announced Wednesday that it has reached a $1.75 million negotiated settlement with attorneys for a man who was a victim of sexual abuse by notorious pedophile priest Oliver O’Grady in the 1980s. The abuse occurred in Stockton, but Sacred Heart Parish in Turlock also was named as a defendant, leading to the filing of the lawsuit in Stanislaus County.

Cardinal Roger Mahony, who was bishop of the Stockton Diocese in the 1980s, when Michael Kelly allegedly sexually assaulted a 10-year-old altar boy, may testify in the second phase of the Kelly trial next week.
Attorney John Manly, who represents the plaintiff, now 37, in his lawsuit against Kelly and the diocese, said he thinks Mahony will be on the witness stand in Stockton next Wednesday or Thursday.
Mahony's attorney, Thomas Hennigan, said he will discuss Mahony's schedule after the cardinal returns home from a meeting in Rome on Sunday.

Now that Father Michael Kelly has been held liable for sexual assault and removed as pastor of a Lockeford parish, his civil trial will focus on the Stockton Diocese's role in handling Kelly and other priests accused of childhood sexual abuse.
"The diocese made a concerted effort to cover up for Father Kelly," attorney John Manly told the jury in his opening statement on Thursday morning. "They value money, power and their reputation more than they do children. Ladies and gentlemen, that has got to stop."

An Irish court has sentenced a former Lodi priest to three years
in prison for possessing child pornography.
Oliver O'Grady, 66, was sentenced Monday at Dublin Circuit
Criminal Court, according to the Irish Courts Service. He
previously pleaded guilty to three counts of possessing child
pornography. He was arrested in Dublin in December 2010 after
leaving a computer containing pornographic images of children on a
flight from Amsterdam.

Judge Bob McNatt said on Monday that he will decide in about two
weeks which is more important — Father Michael Kelly's privacy or
the public's right to know that he is an accused pedophile.
Kelly, a popular priest at St. Joachim's Catholic Church in
Lockeford, is the subject of a civil lawsuit filed in 2008, in
which a man now 37 years old claims that Kelly sexually abused him
in the 1980s. Kelly was a priest at Church of the Annunciation in
Stockton when the alleged abuse took place. The plaintiff's name
has not been disclosed.
