Wine drinkers have spoken! What they are saying is they love many of Lodi’s wines, from blends to Zins. At the Consumer Wine Awards Competition in April, Lodi-area winery took home awards given by everyday wine drinkers. The awards include these platinum- and gold-winning wines from the Lodi appelation;

Have you ever noticed that the words "new and improved" often turn out to be neither? Most of us have been consumers long enough to lower our expectations when we read an advertisement suggesting that some product has been improved upon. In our most cynical moments, we might even roll our eyes in disgust as we realize the only thing "new and improved" about this product is the price.

He was known as “Honest Ben” and the “father of the Senate” in Sacramento in the late 1800s. But in Lodi, the kind-looking, bearded Benjamin F. Langford was known as the honorable gentleman who championed the tree fruit industry and helped establish a local bank and railroad.

One hundred years ago this month, Clements lost a pioneer. Stillman L. Magee was a shipbuilder from Maine. He was a gold miner, store owner, sawmill owner, politician, newspaper publisher, flour mill operator, rancher and businessman who left his mark on the community.

The Delta: The wind is playing havoc on the fishing this past week on the Sacramento River. Trollers are working the West Bank, Dairy, mouth of the Old Sac and Steamboat. Most fish are running 5-9 pounds with an occasional fish in the teens, and lots of shakers. P-Line Angry Eyes and Predators are the baits of choice.

DAN EVANS/NEWS-SENTINEL Damitri Coronado, 6, waited for a bite after casting in to the Mokelumne River during the 18 annual Lodi Lake Fishing Derby on Saturday. This years derby included a contest for anglers 15 years old and younger and a fishing tank for younger children. The dirby was organized by the Lodi Sportsman's Club and sponsored byChildren's Dream Works, Central Valley Anglerrs, Kokanee Power, Fisherman's Friend, Something Fishy, Lockeford Hay Station, General Mills, and Lodi Parks and Recreation.

The red bricks of the Old Sugar Mill glow between the curving river and seemingly endless vineyards on a recent rainy afternoon. The golden sunlight peaking through dark clouds hits the stories of window panes that wink to passersby. From the road, the historic mill seems lonely between fields of dry brush, a few blackberry bushes and acres of vineyards. There is an eeriness in seeing the old building, with its broken windows and scraps of concrete on the ground.
