For every month that Galt Mayor Barbara Payne attends a Sacramento Area Council of Governments meeting, she receives $100. She gets the same taxpayer-funded stipend for attending the monthly meetings of the Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality Management District.

Even though the state of California has suspended parts of a law requiring cities to post agendas 72 hours before a meeting, both the Lodi and Galt city councils have agreed they will continue doing so in the name of transparency.

When Capt. Dan Williams stood before the Lodi City Council and told them about the Salvation Army’s plans to build three units for single parents and their children in early 2011, he was not sure where they would get the money.

Too few volunteers are stepping up to serve on Galt’s committees and commissions, and one Galt City Council member is looking into ways to reverse the trend.
The city’s beautification committee has been unable to meet, as there were not enough members to make the quorum required for public meetings.
The fact that the group has been short three of its members is an issue citywide — and one that has Councilman Randy Shelton concerned with volunteer recruitment and retention.

Flanked by family members and fellow law enforcement officers
from around the state, Mark Helms was sworn in as chief of the Lodi
Police Department on Thursday afternoon. Helms, who was hired from
the Stockton Police Department in July, officially began working
for Lodi on Monday.

Bob Johnson was unanimously elected mayor by his Lodi City
Council colleagues before a packed house at Carnegie Forum on
Wednesday night. Johnson, a councilman since 2004 who also served
for 10 months in 1998 to fill a council vacancy, assumed the role
of mayor for the second time. He previously held the top position
in 2007 and was a real estate appraiser in Lodi for 18 years.

In the race for Lodi City Council seats, candidate Phil
Katzakian has raised more than double of any other candidate.
Katzakian has raised $14,271 for his campaign, while Larry Hansen,
the next closest, has raised $7,083 in his election bid.
