Lodi Lake Park sits on 114 sprawling acres of what was once rich farmland, due to yearly flooding from the Mokelumne River. Swimmers, boaters and picnickers have been drawn to its scenic shores since the city of Lodi bought the land and opened it up for public use in the 1930s.

lake to spawn and lay eggs or give birth to their young: black
bass, blue gill, red eared sun fish, crappie and many others.

Lodi resident Virginia Moore remembers cleaning her childhood
home on Turner Road with her mom and sisters while her father and
brothers were out stacking burlap sandbags. The Mokelumne River was
flooding again, and the men were working to prevent the waters from
reaching houses near Lodi Lake.

The city of Lodi has shut down Lodi Lake Nature Area because of
flooding from the Mokelumne River.
With the river flowing at a higher speed recently, water seeped
through the riverbank into Pigs Lake in the nature area, causing it
The closure is a preview of what could happen if the city of
Lodi does not find a solution to the eroded levee separating the
lake from the river. Water flows in the low lying parts of the
nature area and stretches all the way to the front fence. Redwood
trees are surrounded by several inches of water.

Before we even reached the gate of Stillman Magee Park on the
Mokelumne River, a sheriff's deputy with a hard stare was trying to
get us to leave.
"No one is going on the river," the deputy said behind a pair of
silver sunglasses and through a bristly mustache. "You may as well
turn around and go back."
I was inclined to agree. Less than 100 yards behind him,
whitecaps from the Mokelumne River lapped around trees as branches
raced across the surface of the water.
It looked plain dangerous.
