(BPT) - From dating to driving to curfews, there’s a lot to worry about if you have a teenager. You want to keep your child safe and likely have talked about distracted driving and avoiding texting while behind the wheel, but technology can be distracting while walking, too. More teens are plugged in and tuning out to the world around them. An alarming 39 percent were observed typing on a phone, and 39 percent were wearing headphones while crossing the road.

The city of Galt has silently been working on putting a “quiet zone” into place along the downtown railroad tracks.

Take a walk in some of Lodi’s 30-year-old neighborhoods and you’ll see something unusual: Seven walkways cut between homes, lined with trees, flowerbeds and other landscaping. Neighbors say the walkways are convenient — but sometimes they cause more trouble than they’re worth.

Students at St. Anne's Catholic School will no longer have to dodge cars while walking between the school and St. Anne's Catholic Church on Walnut Street if a proposal goes through to permanently cut off traffic between Pleasant Avenue and Church Street.

The sound of a train whistle floating through an open window during the middle of the night is a common occurrence for Lodi residents.
For the first time, the Lodi City Council discussed the idea of reducing that noise with a quiet zone at a shirtsleeve session on Tuesday.
Mayor JoAnne Mounce, who lives on the Eastside, and Councilman Phil Katzakian, who lives near the railroad tracks in a subdivision next to the Mokelumne River, both described the train noise as consistent throughout the night.

The Lodi Police Department conducted a rail safety operation in conjunction with Union Pacific's Operation Lifesaver on Tuesday as part of Lodi Police Department's commitment to public safety.
The operation was conducted along the railroad tracks within Lodi from roughly 1 to 3 p.m.
According to a press release from the Lodi Police Department, a total of seven Lodi police officers and four Union Pacific officers participated in the event. Officers worked in patrol cars, on bicycles and motorcycles during the enforcement stopping violators for crimes pertaining to rail safety.

Close to a quarter of a million dollars will go toward further improvements in Galt's Old Town area. This was decided on Tuesday when the city council approved $233,028 for engineering work along the C Street-Fourth Street corridor.

With the anticipated approval of a $40,000 contract Tuesday, the Galt City Council can move forward with a proposed quiet zone along the main railroad line.
Currently, engineers blow their horns as they approach intersections throughout Galt to ensure that both pedestrians and motorists are aware of an oncoming train. But supplemental safety measures such as installing raised medians or additional crossing gates could make the horn-blasting unnecessary.
Such noise has been a quality of life with residents and businesses complaining about it, City Manager Jason Behrmann has said.
