The Toronto Star newspaper has reported that Canada’s National Defence officials have given the thumbs down — for now at least — to providing a transport plane to fly three of the Toronto Zoo’s elephants to the Performing Animal Welfare Society, saying the earliest a move could happen would be the fall.

The 2013 Carole Noon Award for Sanctuary Excellence was awarded to Pat Derby posthumously and to the Galt-based Performing Animal Welfare Society, the sanctuary she co-founded, on Wednesday. Derby died in February after a long battle with cancer.
