At first glance, Locke seems like any one of the dozens of tiny towns nestled among the sloughs in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta. Just off of River Road, faded storefronts line Main Street. Cats wander down alleys and along the sidewalks, and birds swoop down to peck at the ground in the openings between buildings. Like many other places in the Delta, it’s not a ghost town, yet it’s far removed from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Every spring during the 1950s, my Sicilian grandmother Nonna would host the entire California branch of the Guzzardi family to a home cooked Italian feast. More than a week in preparation, the meal included all the Italian favorites including pasta dishes, sausages, peppers and artichokes.

On Feb. 17, 13 members of Vinewood Community Church traveled to Dinuba in order to participate for one week at Gleanings for the Hungry, a food distribution program for those in need. The mission is to help feed the hungry of the world, both physically and spiritually.

28th Annual Asparagus Festival
It’s asparagus time again. The time we celebrate the delicious green spear grown locally in the San Joaquin Delta. This year the three-day festival will be held April 26, 27 and 28 at Stockton’s own downtown waterfront.

(NAPSI)—Here’s cool news for when you want to make a nutritious meal fast: The Food and Drug Administration says there’s virtually no nutritional difference between fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables, explains Supermarket Guru Phil Lempert. A well-known food industry expert, Lempert holds the reputation as the premier forecaster of consumer behavior within the world of food. Lempert reports that frozen fruits and vegetables are typically harvested and flash frozen, leaving them more nutrient dense than their fresh fruit and vegetable counterparts, which can spend as much as half of their peak freshness period in distribution.
