Diane Ravitch believes public school teachers are getting bashed
for problems beyond their control. She's strongly critical of
standardized testing, which she says is corroding public education,
not building it.
She is an author, professor, and former Assistant Secretary of
Education who is speaking in Sacramento Friday to the Coalition to
Save Public Education. Many local teachers plan to attend her
Ravitch answered questions by phone from her San Francisco hotel
on how to measure academic success and how charter schools affect

Lodi Unified School District moved closer to the coveted
800-mark in the annual Academic Performance Index figures released
by the state Wednesday. The district increased its growth API
figure by 12 points to 749, up from the base rate of 737 reported
in the spring. Additionally, slightly more schools exceed the
state’s 800-point threshold than last year, and many more are close
to achieving the goal.

days) when Miss Reed put me in the last desk in the back row and
told me I would always be sitting in the last seat in the back row
for as long as I lived, and maybe into the next life as well.
