In regards to William Van Amber Fields’ letter titled “Christians and Muslims are at war, whether we admit it or not,” it is simply not the case. We are not at war with any religion. We are dealing with criminals who use religious or political extremism as an excuse to engage in terrorism, whether it was Osama bin Laden or Timothy McVeigh. Good people, whether Christians, Jews, Muslims, agnostics or atheists, are allies in getting rid of this scourge.

In the Lodi News-Sentinel on March 13, a front-page headline read "Applying for Obama health plan not easy." Many have commented on the coming disaster of "Obamacare," so I'll let this news stand alone and go to other news recently.

A Lodi mom is starting a petition to add Eid al-Fitr to California’s list of holidays that would automatically excuse a child from school. The 24-hour Muslim holiday falls after 30 days of fasting during daylight to observe Ramadan each year, and this year will fall on Aug. 7 and 8 — in the first week of the 2013-14 school year.

The United States, a nation of shame — in my opinion. I can't imagine the anxiety of holding off a numerically superior force and making repeated pleas for help and being denied —all of these denials for support can only come from our Commander-in-Chief, Barack Obama.

Again, today, I looked for a headline in the News-Sentinel saying "Obama lied for more than two weeks." I can't believe that our president can ignore and lie about the terrorist attack on Benghazi, Libya, and you and many other "newspapers" wouldn't print the story.

Dear Straight Talk: I’m in college and my very nice roommates are talking about dressing up as Muslims for Halloween. One, who is buff, is even talking about putting on blackface and going as Muhammad Ali. I think both the blackface and dressing in turbans are bad ideas. They say I’m being too “politically correct.” What do you think? It’s so easy for girls to just wear a sexy outfit, but much harder for guys to come up with a creative costume. Any suggestions? Also, do I go out with them dressed this way? They are my best friends here. — Sam, Boston

This is beyond outrage, it is infuriating. My parents were diplomats in Iran for many years. They both spoke fluent Farsi and had many Iranian friends. Jimmy Carter undermined their efforts and now we have the ayatollahs.

A lie is a lie. I agree with Jeff Lindenberg (Letter to the Editor, The Record, Sept. 20) regarding Paul Ryan's lie about his marathon time, but I would like to ask Mr. Lindenberg, if he is so adamant about holding Paul Ryan to his "lie," is he using the same standards with President Obama by holding him to all his lies, the most egregious one being the president's denial of the recent terrorist attacks on 9/11 in Egypt and Libya?

I've read factless letters sent into this paper warning against a worldwide takeover by the United Nations, of "birthers" insisting that President Obama is not an American citizen and that he's really a Muslim, that undocumented immigrants are overrunning the country and that a conspiracy exists in covering up the "true" nature of the 9/11 tragedy.
