The local media has recently been full of reports of the horrendous car crash in Lodi in which an alleged intoxicated driver killed a family of five and an expected child, and put another child in the hospital. In the months before that, there were more local car crashes with fatalities that involved drivers that seemed to have been alcohol impaired.

Compared to other cities in San Joaquin County, Lodi has a drinking and driving problem. Or does it? While Stockton’s population is more than twice the size of Lodi’s, both cities have arrested nearly the same number of drunk drivers since 2011.

Emily Marino, a volunteer with Mothers Against Drunk Driving, has rescheduled the silent auction to benefit the Walk Like MADD 5K in October. She had planned to hold the auction at the Lodi Grape Festival, but that is not permitted.

Social hosts in Galt who provide a location where minors can drink alcohol or who do not take steps to prevent their consumption of alcohol will have to reimburse police and fire-related costs under an ordinance recently approved by the Galt City Council. It will be formally adopted Tuesday.
Mayor Barbara Payne, who worked with the Galt Youth Alcohol Abuse Prevention Coalition to bring the ordinance before the council, said she hopes there will be a cultural shift regarding underage drinking and that adults will consider what the infraction can mean to young lives.

It was a dark spring night about eight years ago and I was
driving my patrol car down Sacramento Street towards Turner Road. I
had a young citizen rider with me that night and I was in the
middle of explaining the dangers of drunk driving to her when
suddenly a car drifted into our lane. I quickly turned the wheel
and was able to swerve to avoid being struck head on.

The department has made 319 DUI arrests, and the three officers honored have made nearly one-third of those arrests.

Estella Moreno didn't feel good.
The 19-year-old Lodi resident and her boyfriend, Marcos
Martinez, where headed home from her mother's house on a Saturday
night. Martinez was driving because Moreno was feeling sick to her
As they headed down Cherokee Lane, they came upon a DUI
checkpoint being conducted by the Lodi Police Department. Moreno
thought nothing of it — they hadn't been drinking, so it shouldn't
have been a problem.
Little did she know that she and her boyfriend would soon be
left without a vehicle, walking home from the checkpoint.

Two members of the Galt Police Department were honored Tuesday
for the number of DUI arrests they racked up last year. Officers
Keith Russell and Kevin Tonn were two of many officers recognized
at a luncheon in Rancho Cordova, sponsored by the California Office
of Traffic Safety and Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

Officer Eric Versteeg has been with the Lodi Police Department
for more than six years. He was a dispatcher for three years and
was eventually hired as a police officer. He has been on the street
for the past three years.
