(BPT) - From dating to driving to curfews, there’s a lot to worry about if you have a teenager. You want to keep your child safe and likely have talked about distracted driving and avoiding texting while behind the wheel, but technology can be distracting while walking, too. More teens are plugged in and tuning out to the world around them. An alarming 39 percent were observed typing on a phone, and 39 percent were wearing headphones while crossing the road.

Students filed onto the Lodi Middle School blacktop Thursday morning to hear about the dangers of drugs and alcohol from police and a deputy district attorney. But for a school still mourning, the assembly couldn’t escape Tuesday’s horrific crash that took the lives of a classmate and his family.

The father of a Lodi man accused of fatally stabbing a 24-year-old Dodgers fan said his son told him it was self-defense. Michael Montgomery, 21, was arrested and booked into San Francisco Jail on suspicion of homicide, according to the San Francisco Police Department.

With their heads bowed, 70 people listened to the wail of police sirens fade in and out, the noise slicing through the silence. The sirens represented all of the firefighters, police officers and volunteers who drove toward the World Trade Center when the towers collapsed on Sept. 11, 2001.

We’re still stuck in a bit of a rut, it seems, with the local multiplexes offering very few reasonable choices for discriminating moviegoers — unless, of course, your plan is to see “The Avengers” for the fifth or sixth time, which seems perfectly sensible given the options. “Men in Black 3,” opening this weekend and set for review next, may break the monotony, but I’m trying to further temper my already modest expectations.

A 23-year-old man who injured a Lodi police officer will spend
the next six years in state prison. Hardeep Madhara, who threw a
full beer can at the face of a police officer in March, plead no
contest to assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer Friday
in Lodi Superior Court. Friday was Madhara's last day to accept a
plea deal before a criminal trial began. Madhara received his
second strike with the plea.
