On the night of Nov. 1, two Lodi police officers drew their weapons and took cover. In the darkness, the officers could only see the silhouette of an automatic rifle resting on the lap of a man sitting on a bus bench near the intersection of Oak and Washington streets. They yelled at the man to drop his weapon and put his arms in the air.

Thank you and a big salute to Sgt. Mike Kermgard and the Lodi Police Department, Caltrans Maintenance Regional Manager Rick McComb and the Caltrans crew, City Manager Rad Bartlam and the Lodi City Council — especially JoAnne Mounce and Bob Johnson — for their work on Operation Transient. During the past two weeks they have performed beautifully, hopefully meeting two serious issues in the area by the Highway 99 bridge over the Mokelumne River. The issues are fire safety and sanitation.

A driver going southbound on Ham Lane hit a postal worker who
was crossing Walnut Street at about 10 a.m. today
The postal worker is now in the hospital in serious condition,
officer Mike Kermgard said.
The accident is still under investigation, but it appears no
alcohol or drugs are involved. Kermgard did not release the names
of the postal worker or the driver.
