The Lodi Unified School District board of trustees called a special meeting today to begin the process of appointing a new trustee to represent Area 1. Currently, Bonnie Cassel holds that seat. Her term is set to run through December 2014.

Though Lodi Unified School District trustee Michael Abdallah of Stockton will not run for re-election this year, he plans to stay involved with schools in the district as long as he is living in the area.

Several people took advantage of the extended filing deadline this week to run for local school, water and fire district boards. Several of the filings took place on Wednesday, the deadline in districts in where an incumbent decided not to seek re-election.

Although the Lodi and Galt city councils share the greatest limelight among local races in the November election, there are several lower profile seats on various water and fire boards that remain up for grabs.
The deadline to file for local boards and councils expired last Friday — that is, unless an incumbent didn't file for re-election. In that case, the filing deadline is extended until 5 p.m. Wednesday, and incumbents are ineligible to file for another term.

The Lodi Unified School District board of trustees conducted its
final meeting of the year Tuesday with new leadership. Ron Heberle
was appointed president of the board, with Joe Nava serving as vice
president and Michael Abdallah as clerk. Trustee Bonnie Cassel was
nominated for the president spot, but was outvoted 4-2, with only
herself and Ruth Davis voting against Heberle. Cassel was also
nominated for vice president, but declined the office.

Lodi Unified School District is moving forward with a new system
that will streamline the process of changing grades, and guard
against anyone other than a teacher altering a letter grade once it
has been entered.
Although Assistant Superintendent Odie Douglas said the issue
has been under discussion for years, the direction comes after the
district found that former Liberty High School principal Robert
Rivas changed student grades. Under policies in place at the time,
there was no uniform practice among the high schools, and
principals had broad latitude in determining what procedures and
practices they wished to follow.

will resign effective Nov. 3.
