From outside the red brick Central Street storefront, there is no feeling of a traditional Lodi winery. No barrels filled with bright flowers, and no planters of vines plucked from a vineyard. There’s not even a sign to let passersby know Viñedos Aurora wines are made inside.

This is what the M-2 Winery will look like by the end of the year or in early 2014. The tasting room will have movable walls, allowing for open space when the weather is pleasant, or closed during excessively cold or hot weather. John Vierra of Delta Buildings designed the structures that will be built on Peltier Road.

The Lodi area, with a growing number of wineries, will see the expansion of a growing business — this one on Peltier Road between Highway 99 and Lower Sacramento Road.

She radiates confidence and sex appeal. Her long hair — always fiery red with subtle waves hanging around her shoulders — is her signature. Sometimes she appears frivolous and carefree, her body wrapped around a wine bottle with that wide red smile. Other times, she is contemplative; lying at the edge of the Lodi Lake with a glass of purple wine in her hand and strappy heels on her feet.

While approving a winery application for an Acampo project and another in the Tracy area on Thursday, San Joaquin County planning commissioners were looking at the bigger picture — whether wineries were trying to beat the clock before a potentially more restrictive ordinance is adopted by the county.

This weekend marks the 14th annual Wine & Chocolate event,
but the two-day celebration is about more than just sweets and
LangeTwins Family Winery in Acampo is hosting an art show
showcasing three professional photographers. m2 Winery on East
Turner Road invited an artist to paint a piece live in front of
guests. Boitano Family Wines in Lockeford is offering "Mom's
special cheese balls with crackers," and Omega Cellars on North
Highway 88 is serving Greek-themed food such as marinated pork
souvlaki and chocolate-covered baklava. And three wineries are
coordinating to host a chocolate-chili cookoff.

& Grape Symposium.

A team of 66 judges showered Lodi vintners with awards at a
national showcase earlier this month. More than 5,000 wines from
across the country were entered at the 2011 San Francisco Chronicle
Wine Competition and a total of 133 Lodi wines came away with
medals. The trophy cache is the region’s best showing in the
26-year history of the competition. But one competition official
said Lodi’s success in the event is becoming an annual trend.

In 2011, there aren’t many restaurants where you can walk in and
feel like part of a family. You have no idea who’s behind the
swinging door where your food is prepared. You don’t know what goes
into the creation of your dish. All you really know is your
servers’ name. Maybe.
