Dear Straight Talk: Every morning I drive my granddaughter to high school and observe all the kids, every hand gripping a cellphone. I’ve been in the newspaper business 46 years, and I’d like to ask what young people today read. When they are on the Internet, are they surfing, social networking or actually reading? Apart from school assignments, do they read newspapers, magazines and books? — Barbara Hale, features editor, Merced Sun-Star

If you want to know about artists, take a peek into their
workspaces. You can learn a lot from what covers the spaces — is it
messy with open bottles of acrylics or neat and organized? For
some, it’s where they draw inspiration — from tattered paper pinned
on a busy cork board to piles of beads in colors that, strangely,
work well together and create their own patterns. Some artists
spend a few hours in their studios, while others literally live and
sleep in them.

Watching the television screen on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001,
most Americans felt helpless. But Lodi area artists — whether it
was that day or in the weeks to come — took to their palettes and
drawing boards and put their hearts and tears on blank canvases to
show their patriotism, the vulnerability that was felt across
America and the grief that struck a nation.

Dear Readers: I’d be lost without this list. I
shop from it exclusively. Yes, I’m talking about Straight Talk’s
annual shopping list for teens — (FYI: official adolescence goes to
age 25). Direct from the source, we bring you the hot tech gifts,
board games, books — and this year, the best boxer briefs! Keep in
mind, most Millennial Generation kids enjoy their families and will
prefer a shopping date over gift cards. You’re my superhero if you
avoid video games, TVs, and other brain-drains that isolate kids
from real-time socializing. More superhero status if you hold off
on a cell phone until high school. Include a box of Thank You cards
(standing over your offspring while they are written), and you’re
my choice for a Nobel. Happy shopping!

Some are paint splattered. Some are cluttered with piles of
blank canvases, inspiration boards and tiny boxes of shiny buttons
and beads. Others are tidy, the most organized room in the house.
Some are large. And some aren't. Some are converted bedrooms,
others are a corner under a carport.
