Katie Westerterp leaned with both hands against the track fence on Friday afternoon, huffing and puffing as she spoke.
The Lodi High School senior had just powered through in the final stretch to capture the 400-meter race — in school-record time, it turned out — but there was little time to rest up.
Her day at the San Joaquin Athletic Association championships was only half-way over, and would not end until three hours later, with the big stadium lights shining on Bear Creek High School’s track.
As it turned out, the wait was worth every minute.
One day after Tokay’s Jannell Hadnot captured four league titles at the TCAL meet, Westerterp dealt a four-of-a-kind of her own — becoming the first athlete in school history to go four-for-four at SJAAs.
