It isn’t every day that a seventh-grade girl throws three
consecutive pitches during the annual student/staff softball game
to strike out her math teacher at home plate. And it isn’t every
day that the same young girl hits the ball over the heads of her
teachers standing tall in the outfield during that same game. But
she did exactly that!

The optimum classroom doesn’t necessarily have desks arranged
neatly in rows and bulletin boards lining the walls. The teacher
isn’t seated at a desk, red pen and gradebook in hand.
Sgt. 1st Class Frank Chavez, of Sacramento, enjoys a meal with students at Vineyard Christian Middle School. While on leave from Iraq, the soldier visited the school and presented principal Karen Hale with a flag after developing a pen-pal relationship with students.

Vineyard Christian Middle School students recently received a
visit from a friend who has been living overseas.
On his way from Iraq to a mission in Los Angeles, Frank Chavez
made a special stop at the Lodi campus.
“He is such a great guy,” school principal Karen Hale said. “We
are very lucky to have his kind representing our country in the
