Pacific Gas and Electric Company recently contributed $10,000 towards the Cosumnes River Preserve environmental education program. Funding has provided opportunities for Galt students to participate in environmental education and stewardship projects.

John Durand, the Galt Joint Union Elementary School District youth development coordinator, has secured more than $50,000 in funding to support service learning and outdoor education opportunities for district students this school year.

John Durand has been recognized by community organizations for
his work with Galt's youths. But he's also got a soft spot for the
birds that flock to the Cosumnes River Preserve. He regularly leads
student tours there.

Although the district's transportation department has been
operating with a quarter of a million dollar or more deficit for at
least two years, Galt Joint Union Elementary School District
trustees decided against charging students to ride the bus. The fee
would have gone into effect come fall.
John Durand, service learning coordinator for the Cosumnes River Preserve, expects between 500 and 600 visitors to the preserve, depending on the weather, during Galt's 4th Annual Winter Bird Festival.

died. Unlike most heart attack victims, Mims wanted to celebrate
that anniversary by meeting the firefighters and paramedics who
